02 Editorial design: Narrative & curatorial photography

Project brief
The aim of this project was to create a horizontal/panoramic layout that illustrates, photographically, a narrative that focusses or highlights one or more of the following visual qualities: shape, texture, pattern, colour and tonal values. The sequence need not have a literal or ‘obvious’ story, in fact, it should remain an abstract piece. The idea is to photograph, edit but also curate a narrative as a ‘concept’ for the viewer using only photography.

Deliverables
01  A unique series of 5 images which will be presented on a single image/canvas, comprised of:
     • 3 black and white documentary photos
     • 2 black and white or colour fashion photos
02  Print deliverable

Design strategy
My strategy for this project was to capture a number of documentary photographs before moving on to the fashion photography. During the process of taking documentary photos, I tried to do exactly that; document my everyday life and routine. In doing this I attempted to take pictures of ordinary objects or scenes from interesting or unusual angles so viewers could see these objects or scenes from a completely different perspective. I tried to incorporate interesting shapes and textures in these documentary photos. I followed the same approach with the fashion photography by taking photos of the model from unexpected angles and in unusual poses. I tried to incorporate the visual quality of shape and texture in the fashion photography as well.
